چکیده

Damage to the left or the right hemisphere can result in qualitatively and quantitatively different patterns of behavioural impairment. Damage to the right hemisphere, for example, frequently results in neglect, characterised by inattention to the contralesional side of space: this outcome is less frequent following left hemisphere damage. However, the type of stimulus to which the neglect patient is attending modulates the occurrence and severity of neglect. In the case of reading single words, there is mounting evidence that neglect is more severe following left than right hemisphere damage. We locate this asymmetry in an account of spatial cognition that draws on processing styles in the two hemispheres. We provide a computational model of neglect instantiating small receptive field visual processing in the left hemisphere and large receptive fields in the right hemisphere. The model demonstrated more neglect for nonlexical stimuli and less neglect for words following right damage compared with left damage.

Applying neuroanatomical distinctions to connectionist cognitive modelling

We show examples of how low-level, qualitative neuroanatomical hemispheric differences can give rise to detailed psychologically realistic behaviour. We illustrate this claim with examples from the cognitive modelling of unilateral visuospatial neglect and neglect dyslexia. Our models are based on two principles: the division of information processing between the two hemispheres; and the implem...

On the interaction of selective attention and lexical knowledge: a connectionist account of neglect dyslexia.

Neglect dyslexia, a reading impairment acquired as a consequence of brain injury, is traditionally interpreted as a disturbance of selective attention. Patients with neglect dyslexia may ignore the left side of an open book, the beginning words of a line of text, or the beginning letters of a single word. These patients provide a rich but sometimes contradictory source of data regarding the loc...

Neglect dyslexia with a stimulus-centred deficit and without visuospatial neglect.

This paper reports a single case of ipsilesional left neglect dyslexia and interprets it according to the three-level model of visual word recognition proposed by Caramazza and Hillis (1990). The three levels reflect a progression from the physical stimulus to an abstract representation of a word. RR was not impaired at the first, retinocentric, level, which represents the individual features o...

The effect of syntax on reading in neglect dyslexia.

Individuals with text-based neglect dyslexia omit words on the neglected side of the sentence or text, usually on the left side. This study tested whether the syntactic structure of the target sentence affects reading in this type of neglect dyslexia. Because Hebrew is read from right to left, it enables testing whether the beginning of the sentence and its syntactic properties determine if the...
